Haiku DD

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 20, 2009, 9:54 AM
UPDATE: Earning a DD has been quite a rush. My poem has been viewed by over 4000 deviants, nearly 200 of whom chose to grant it a :+fav:. I am beyond words with gratitude and I hope no one takes offense that it may take me a number of weeks to thank everyone.

Please see below for news of the winners of the :iconthe-haiku-club: October Saijiki Contest.

ORIGINAL ENTRY: I think everyone here hopes to get a Daily Deviation, and I have to admit to being no different. Now that it has happened, however, I am Jack's Totality of Astonishment! Wow, it really happened! What is more amazing to me is that I earned for one of humble efforts at haiku entitled simply night sky haiku (haiku typically do not have titles, thus the generic nature of this one).

My entry in the Night Sky Contest held :iconthe-haiku-club:, where this poem earned an honorable mention.

First place went to :iconreddragonfly: for deceptively simply Pearblossom Highway.

:iconjulietcaesar: took second place with her haibun Obsidian Sky. The haibun is a form made famous by the great haiku poet Basho and combines prose and haiku. In a proper haibun, the prose and poetry work together to create something greater that the some of its two elements. This haibun does just that, and quite masterfully.

Third place went another excellent haibun, Maine Winter 1968-69 by :iconrlkirkland: which creatively compares the wonder of the aurora borealis with the humble but equally wonderous jellyfish.

Besides myself, honorable mentions also went to :iconaqua-rat: for her observation of clouds that reminded her of Diana's hounds

and to :iconmooshu17: for her Night Sky Tanka where she gives the readers a glimpse of what it's like to be surrounded by stars.

The :iconthe-haiku-club: October Saijiki Contest asked for eastern poems with clear references to the season (a typical requirement of haiku call kigo.

First place 'Scarecrows' by :iconmreid973: is a timely haibun that deals with the hysteria surrounding vaccine distribution.

One of my poetic collaborators, :iconcoldcontactkiss: tied with another collaborator :icondjoseph: for second place. Ironically, they both wrote about autumn rain.

Third place went to yet another collaborator :iconaqua-rat: for her haibun 'Autumn Wind'.

Honorable Mentions went to :iconlucidflux: :iconshinamoriwing: and to me (once again).

There is still plenty of time to join :iconthe-haiku-club: Sonorous Sounds Contest. Details here: [link]
